Seashells by the Seashore - Beach Wedding Ideas

A day at the beach? What could be more fun! Whether on the sandy beaches overlooking the Jersey shore, the illustrious sprawling estates of the Hamptons, or the rocky coastlines of northern New England, a wedding set on the Northeast Coast is sure to bring a smile. The Atlantic Ocean is the backdrop for your day and sets the tone. Fresh sea air, the sound of the waves, and the call of the seagulls overhead all add to the atmosphere. Nightfall decorates with a canopy of stars. What a venue!

Coastal weddings can be simple or grand, laid back or formal. They can be outdoor receptions on sprawling estate lawns overlooking the water or carefree barefoot events on the beach. Visions of navy blue, gray, white, and ecru color palettes under massive white tents with twinkling lights easily come to mind. Decorate with

centerpieces overflowing with stunning blue hydrangeas, garden roses in galvanized pails, and cocktail tables with peonies in mason jars. Scatter driftwood, sea shells, and sand dollars throughout the venue. Escort cards and favors sitting atop sea-glass reflect the setting. Think about homemade preserves in beautifully packaged jars or regional favorites like saltwater taffy, fudge, or mini-blueberry pies. Chocolates shaped like seashells or sugar cookies in the shape of sand dollars or lobsters are a treat for everyone.

The coast often evokes memories of playful family vacations or happy times during the summer, so play up those themes. Be sure to allow time for guests to mingle or take advantage of the location. Having a weekend long party provides this opportunity. Consider a clambake as a welcome dinner and on the wedding day a picnic brunch on the beach for your guests. Champagne is always welcome, but you could really showcase the region by serving some local handcrafted beers as well. Fill large silver ice buckets with beer and local soda to have on hand before the ceremony starts. Mixing the high and low experiences will add to the relaxed atmosphere. Remember that when the sun goes down those strong ocean breezes come up, so have pashminas or throws available for guests who may get chilled.

A coastal setting is a lovely backdrop for this most special event. Whether incorporating a playful element of the Jersey shore or the romantic rustic elegance of New England, the locales are one of a kind. So grab that pail and shovel and plan away!

I love the idea of incorporating local flavors with your wedding. Sometimes it is the attention to the smallest details that can truly make an event.
