Experience Bioluminescence Night Kayaking in Fajardo Bay
Blue water glowing, shimmering, and radiating light with each stroke of the kayak paddle. Kayaking after dark in Fajardo Bay is one experience that is almost exclusive to Puerto Rico. There are only five bioluminescent bays with this concentration in the world and three of them are in Puerto Rico. The sparkling effect is the result of millions of one-celled organisms that emit light when pressure is applied to the cell wall. Our preferred explanation is a legend that includes a Golden Heron, fairies, and a child’s
tears, but that’s for you to choose. Tours guides provide the kayaks and the expertise to take you on this marvelous voyage. (One piece of advice…take along some mosquito spray and plastic bags for valuables.) Different moon phases are preferable, but we doubt that there is a bad night to visit.
Only 30 miles from Old San Juan, what could be more romantic? The stars twinkle above and the water glistens below…..that’s magic.

This is my favorite. Every time I go to PR, I have to kayak in the bio bay.
amazing pictures! makes me want to experience it again
I was on this trip with the photographer and it truly was as amazing as they say and as the pictures show. It was like the stars in the sky all fell into the water and everything around you glowed neon with movement. Just to do this was worth an entire trip to Puerto Rico! I reccommend it for anyone looking for a truly memorable experience and one that is a unique, once in a lifetime experience!
We did this on our Honeymoon!! It was so fun — I definitely want to go back and do it again sometime. =)
