Crouching Lion - Kahana Bay - O’ahu Hawaii
O’ahu truly is a gem of an island with so much to see. If we could offer one tip, it would be to set aside the better part of a day to drive around the island. There is no better way to experience all of its charms.
Start your day with a trip to the North Shore. Depending upon the time of year, you may see giant killer waves crashing into the shoreline and a host of surfers. After you have experienced all of the North Shore’s
intoxicating charms, keep driving toward Ka’a’awa, located on the Windward (Eastern) side of O’ahu. As you are cruising along the Kamehameha Highway, look to your right and search for a charming little inn nestled beneath a massive rock formation. This side of the island is rather remote and catching sight of the Crouching Lion Inn is a bit like seeing a mirage in the desert, so make sure not to speed past it.
Pull into the parking lot and take in the enormous cliff with the rock formation on top. Resting amidst the Ko’olau Mountains above the Kahana Bay with a direct view of the ocean, the Crouching Lion Inn is one of the island’s most treasured scenic locales. Named after the towering lion-shaped rock formation which sits directly behind the restaurant, the building was constructed as a private residence in 1927. It was later converted to an inn and restaurant for travelers and has been operating as such for more than sixty years. In spring of 2008, the inn underwent an extensive renovation and has since reopened. The laid-back restaurant boasts magnificent views of the Pacific, and the menu is filled with local Hawaiian favorites. Be sure to try the Bahia fish and shrimp stew or the Kalua Pork and Cabbage, the inn’s specialties. And if in the mood for some simple grilled fish, the salmon skewers are amazing. And better yet, the inn can be rented for special events such as wedding receptions. How amazing would that be?
Now, more on that rock formation. Hawaiian legend claims that this stone lion was once a deity named Kauahi (Watch Tower of Heaven). Because of the overwhelming urge to leave his post and visit the rest of the island, and tempted by the alluring song of Hawaii’s patron goddess Hi’iaka, the lion attempted to rise from the mountain, only to make it to the crouching position before turning to stone. This is how the lion has remained ever since, now proudly watching over the town and its people.
A spot filled with history, great food, and wonderful cocktails is a true must for any traveler. Even if you are in a rush – which is doubtful, for time has a way of slowing down on this island – be sure to stop by and have an ice cold Longboard Ale on the Inn’s lanai. Even in the rain, this is an amazing place to sit and ponder the island’s natural beauty. With its picture-perfect view of the Pacific, it is truly unforgettable.
Aloha…..
The Couching Lion Inn and its story add to the romance of time spent on O’ahu.
